CMS Strategizes Solutions to AYP Concerns

In previous CSD Spotlight articles, we have talked about the federal No Child Left Behind Act and about Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP. We have also talked about each school’s annual report to the school board, including Colchester Middle School’s. CMS was identified as a school in need of improvement based upon the results of the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) assessments given to its students. A proactive approach to this situation is to reenergize and strategize innovative approaches to curriculum, instruction, and assessment—and that is precisely what CMS is doing.

Among the numerous changes taking place, CMS’s Educational Leadership Team (ELT) has been charged with collaborating with the administrative teams at CMS and Colchester School District’s Central Office in order to implement best practices in middle-level education.

Additionally, Curriculum Area Teams (CATs) will ensure consistency across the content areas and will work to develop a classroom-level lesson-planning process that is student centered and driven by best practices.

Furthermore, CMS will increase its focus upon professional development opportunities and will take a number of steps to further clarify its educational vision in order to make a difference for its students. CMS’s educational professionals will work collaboratively to strengthen its curriculum, instruction, and assessments in order to improve performance for all of its learners. And because strong, cooperative family relationships positively impact student learning, CMS will introduce a series of Parent Information Nights that will allow further collaborative exploration of its literacy and mathematics programming with students, families, faculty, and administration.
