CHS To Host Spring Band Concert on April 2

The Colchester High School band will hold its Spring Band Concert on Thursday, April 2 at 7 pm in the CHS Theatre. The performance is free and open to the public.

The CHS Concert Band will perform several  pieces, including a Spanish piece written in the “Paso Doble” style titled, “Espana Cani.” The CHS Jazz Band will perform three selections from one of the masters of the big band genre – Duke Ellington. There will also be various small chamber group performances throughout the concert, including a saxophone ensemble performing an arrangement of “The Muppet Show Theme”! The performance is expected to last a little over an hour.

Friends of Colchester Music will be selling flowers and DVDs at the event. LCATV will be recording the event.

Colchester High School (CHS) band and choral ensembles perform at the CHS Annual Music and Meal Soiree that was held on February 13 in the CHS cafeteria. The evening featured several small group performances by CHS band and choral students while parents and community members enjoyed a spaghetti meal.

Malletts Bay School Plans Evening of Math and Cookies


On Wednesday, April 8th beginning at 6:15 p.m. Malletts Bay School will sponsor a unique celebration of mathematics, open to the entire community.  Entitled “Math and Cookies,” the evening is billed as “a deliciously smart family night.”  Participants will learn how community members use math in their occupations.  Presenters include Eric Nelson of Eye and I Glass; Leah Chiarmonte of the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; computer scientist Tom Bacon; and Sean Parker, meteorologist for local station Fox 44.  In addition to the presentations, participants will be able to view displays including “math and quilting” by Town Clerk Karen Richard; “rising nutrient levels in Malletts Bay” by Karen Bates; “math and legos” by Rachel and Mason Alling; and many student displays.  The gymnasium will be filled with activities led by fifth grade students who are part of the school’s “Fuel Up to Play 60” student wellness team.  Of course, there will be cookies!

CMS Cougars Compete in Jr. Iron Chef

Colchester Middle School has five young 6th grade chefs competing in the upcoming Jr. Iron Chef Competition at the Expo in Essex on Saturday, March 21.  They have been practicing different dishes like sandwiches, salads, and breakfast each week and have adapted a recipe for Colchester Cougar Corn Chowder served with Parmesan Crisps and Garlic Herb Crostini.  The group has sourced local products whenever possible.  The team has learned basic food safety, preparation, and teamwork over the course of the year.  They are excited about the upcoming competition.  Their chowder will also be served at the upcoming CMS family/community night on March 27, 2015.

It is that time of year again — time to register for kindergarten! This registration is for children who will attend public kindergarten in Colchester during the 2015/2016 school year. Children must be five years old before September 1, 2015.

At the time of registration, you must bring the following items:

  • Immunization Records — Please get a copy now from your child’s doctor and bring it with you at the time of registration. This information is required by the Vermont Department of Health.
  • Birth Certificate
  • Proof of Residency
One of the following documents is required to verify residency in Colchester, Vermont.


Two of the following documents are required to verify residency in Colchester, Vermont.
  • A current property tax bill
  • Current mortgage papers/closing statement showing a Colchester address and the name of the legal parent/guardian, or custodian
  • Formal lease showing the name, address, and telephone number of the landlord; Colchester address and name of lessee
  • A notarized letter from the landlord stating the address of the residence being leased and the name(s) of the lessee(s) with the landlord’s address and telephone number
  • Valid Vermont driver’s license with Colchester address
  • Valid Vermont non-driver ID with Colchester address
  • Current utility bill in your name, with Colchester address
  • Valid public aid card
  • Bank statement for last or current month (financial information omitted) with Colchester address

Your child will accompany you on the date and time of the appointment, as they will take part in a two-hour screening.

CSD Seeking Young Peers for EEE Program — Open House on March 16!


Colchester School District is looking for typically developing peers to participate in our Essential Early Education (EEE) program at Malletts Bay School. The preschool open house will take place on Monday, March 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Malletts Bay School.

The half-day preschool classes will follow the 2015–2016 school calendar (observing all school holidays and vacations) for their duration. Peers will model language, social communication, and play for students learning these skills. They will develop friendships while gaining confidence and school-readiness skills in a literacy-rich environment with experienced educators and support personnel.


Participating children must be three or four years old by September 1 and live in Colchester. Please note: children need not be three or four in order to attend the March 16 open house; they must only be three or four by September 1 to participate in the program.

Transportation will not be provided for participants.
